Day 1 - 6/29/15

Today was the first day of the internship. We looked at many different methods of displaying data some static images, other interactive activities. We worked on critiquing existing info graphics and developing solutions for the problems in order to prevent future mistakes and help with development of our own graphics. I began looking at many different graphs and data displays as well as the raw data provided by the USGS and began brainstorming ideas to better display the data. I went in to Adobe Illustrator and worked on simple info graphic elements that I could use to display the data and began trying to fit the data in to the graphics to finish off the day.

  1. Great job in providing a summary of today's work. You seem to have a natural talent in understanding design thinking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_thinking). I'm excited to hear that you have started to use Adobe Illustrator to create some simple graphic elements. Try to see if you can insert images of your graphic elements in your blog post to show others what you are working on.

Also since you have a keen interest in games, maybe you can provide input on what type of games we can create with the mineral resources data. Since you are a gamer, think of what motivates you to continue playing a game. What different levels would you create to make the game harder but more fun to keep playing.

During your first week of the internship, we will work on narrowing down what type of project you will focus on. Try to think of what kind of meaningful stories we can potentially tell from the USGS minerals datasets. At the same time, think of what skills and tools you want to gain during the internship. Share this as blog posts throughout this week.

  2. A few suggestions to make your blog post even more fun to read:

    1. Be specific. When you say "we worked on critiquing existing info graphics", it would be wonderful if you could link to an example or two (hypertext rocks!).

    2. Use screenshots and links liberally. Especially when discussing visual topics like design, you really have to show us, not just tell us.

I'll be working on learning data visualization as well these next several weeks, so it will be fun to compare notes!

  3. Where is the blog post for day 2? I'm so eager to read what happened!
